Biography
David Lewis Davies (also credited as David Davies) was a Welsh stage and film actor. Born on 3 April 1906 in Brynmawr, Brecknockshire, he began his working life as a policeman in Essex before taking up acting after medical retirement in 1937. He made his stage debut in London in 1942 and appeared regularly in British films and television until 1972.
Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall, Davies was frequently cast in authority roles such as police officers or military figures. His film credits include Mr. Arrow in Treasure Island (1950), a City Policeman in The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), a Desk Sergeant in Tiger Bay (1959), the Quaestor in Ben-Hur (1959), the Lead Villager in The Masque of the Red Death (1964) and the Captain of the Galtesund in The Heroes of Telemark (1965). Television work encompassed guest roles in The Avengers and a stint in Coronation Street (1971–1972) as Lt. Comm. Prince; his final screen appearance was as Utah Watkins in Under Milk Wood (1972). He died in June 1974 in Carmarthen, Wales.
