Biography

David Kane is a Scottish screenwriter, director and producer. He has been lead writer and executive producer on seven seasons of the BBC crime drama Shetland (2013–2022).

Kane was born in 1961 in Polbeth, Scotland. He studied painting and photography at art school before winning the National Screenwriters Award. His early television work includes creating the supernatural series Sea of Souls (2004–2007) and writing episodes of Foyle's War (2002) and Taggart. Feature film credits include the screenplays for This Year's Love (1999) and Born Romantic (2000), both of which he also directed, and The River King (2005).

He has also adapted novels for television, including The Field of Blood (2011) and Stonemouth (2015), and written several stage plays. Kane received BAFTA Scotland nominations for his work on The Field of Blood and Shetland.
