David Mitchell makes self-consciousness look like hard work, and makes us laugh at the effort. We rate him most highly when a character’s careful speech cannot disguise how much he has to excuse.

In Peep Show (2003), David Mitchell’s Mark Corrigan makes finishing a sentence look like something that requires several checks. Each word seems to pass through an inspection for possible objections before he allows it out. We laughed and felt uncomfortable because his excuses sound so carefully prepared, even when the internal narration lets us hear what he is trying to conceal. Mitchell makes the effort of speaking almost as funny as what is said.
The point-of-view camerawork keeps us close, while Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s writing makes the discomfort worth bearing. Robert Webb’s Jeremy Usborne supplies a different way of avoiding responsibility, with a loose confidence that makes a flimsy explanation sound sufficient. Mitchell seems to check his words; Webb appears satisfied to have found some. Neither asks for our affection before making us laugh, which allows the shared-home comedy to be considerably less cosy than that description suggests.
The partnership also runs through the sketch series That Mitchell and Webb Look (2006) and the comedy-drama Back (2017). Mitchell’s other leading roles include William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s Upstart Crow (2016) and a puzzle-setter impersonating his detective twin in Ludwig (2024). That detective premise gives an actor frequently cast as socially awkward, rule-following men a clear reason to look uneasy. It is a sensible development for a performer whose precise delivery makes the prospect of saying the wrong thing so tangible.
Repeated casting as nervous, rule-following men does risk making him predictable. Mark avoids that problem because the precision tells us so much about his cowardice: he is taking care over the wrong things. The relentless embarrassment can wear us down even while the writing and the performances remain sharp. Start with Peep Show, but leave a gap between episodes.
Biography
David Mitchell is a British comedian, actor and writer. He is best known for playing Mark Corrigan in the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show (2003–2015), a role for which he won the British Academy Television Award for Best Comedy Performance in 2009.
Alongside Robert Webb, with whom he forms the comedy duo Mitchell and Webb, he has written and starred in sketch shows including That Mitchell and Webb Look and the film Magicians (2007). Mitchell has also appeared in Upstart Crow (2016–2018) as William Shakespeare and stars as John 'Ludwig' Taylor in the BBC series Ludwig (2024–).
He is a regular on British panel shows, serving as a team captain on Would I Lie to You? (2007–) and hosting The Unbelievable Truth on BBC Radio 4.
