Biography
David Stal is a composer working in film and television. He studied composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and completed its Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television certificate programme, receiving the Joe and Alice Harnell Scholar Award.
Since 2017 he has collaborated with composer Carlos Rafael Rivera, providing additional music on series including Godless (2017) and The Queen’s Gambit (2020). On the HBO series Hacks (2021–), he contributed additional music to the first season and has served as co-composer from the second season onwards.
Stal has composed scores for features including Axcellerator (2020) and Breakup Season (2024). He has received Primetime Emmy nominations for his work on Hacks.
