Biography
David Williamson is an Australian playwright and screenwriter. Born in Melbourne in 1942, he studied mechanical engineering before turning to writing in the late 1960s. His early plays, including The Removalists (1971) and Don's Party (1971), established him as a leading dramatist of contemporary Australian life.
Williamson has written numerous screenplays and teleplays. He received the Australian Film Institute award for best screenplay for Gallipoli (1981), The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) and Balibo (2009). Other credits include the teleplay for On the Beach (2000). He has won multiple AWGIE Awards and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.
