In Life Feels Good (2013), Dawid Ogrodnik's Mateusz Rosiński communicates through gesture and physical effort. His preparation involved months of thinking about how to build a character without words. Extensive research and physical changes recur in his preparation for roles, but neither would count for much if the resulting gestures failed to make sense to us. What matters on screen is the clarity of the physical acting, which makes those movements readable without dialogue to explain them. We rate him for that precision, while remaining wary of treating a difficult part as proof of a good performance.
Ida (2013) puts him in a supporting part as Lis, under Paweł Pawlikowski's direction. We were moved by the encounter between the novice nun and her aunt, whose two performances reward the film's quiet attention. The careful framing sometimes kept us further away than we wanted, a reservation we would not discard simply because the film is so accomplished. The attention paid to the two women gives us enough reason to stay with it, even when the compositions make their pain feel a little too carefully arranged. It remains our clearest recommendation here, with the caveat that the central relationship belongs to the two women and Ogrodnik is not its principal attraction.
His earlier supporting role as Rahim in You Are God (2012) brought him attention before the move into leading parts. Biographical drama subsequently became a recurring part of the work, with Tomasz Beksiński in The Last Family (2016) and Jan Kaczkowski in Johnny (2022). Silent Night (2017), in which he plays Adam, offers a family drama alongside those portrayals of real people. Directors Maciej Pieprzyca and Leszek Dawid have each worked with him twice.
The reservation is the exaggeration in The Last Family: the character's perspective can account for it without making every emphatic choice work. We do not need every feeling pressed upon us quite so firmly. Ogrodnik's physical commitment is worth watching, but we would not recommend him on the strength of transformation alone. Dawid Ogrodnik is a Polish actor. He was born on 15 June 1986 in Wągrowiec and trained at the National Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków.
He is known for his role as Lis in Ida (2013). Other notable film roles include Sebastian 'Rahim' Salbert in You Are God (2012), Mateusz Rosiński in Life Feels Good (2013), Tomasz Beksiński in The Last Family (2016) and Jan Kaczkowski in Johnny (2022). He has also appeared in television series such as The Mire (2018).
Ogrodnik has received multiple awards for his performances, including Polish Academy Awards for Best Actor and several honours at the Gdynia Film Festival.
