Biography

Declan Mulholland (6 December 1932 – 29 June 1999) was a Northern Irish character actor of film and television. Born Thomas Declan Mulholland in Belfast, he began acting in London’s Unity Theatre in the late 1950s and worked extensively on stage, including with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court Theatre.

His screen career spanned from 1962 to 1997. He appeared in films such as H.M.S. Defiant (1962), Theatre of Blood (1973), The Land That Time Forgot (1974), Time Bandits (1981) and War of the Buttons (1994). On television he had multiple roles in Doctor Who (as Clark and Till) and guest parts in series including The Avengers, The Bill, Casualty and Father Ted (1996), in which he played the Shouting Priest.

Mulholland is also noted for portraying a human version of Jabba the Hutt in a scene deleted from the original Star Wars (1977); the footage was restored in the 1997 Special Edition with the character replaced by CGI.
