Biography

Deepa Mehta is an Indian-born Canadian film director and screenwriter. She studied philosophy at the University of New Delhi before moving to Canada, where she began her career making documentaries.

Mehta is best known for her Elements Trilogy: Fire (1996), Earth (1998) and Water (2005). Her other feature films include Bollywood/Hollywood (2002), Midnight's Children (2012) and Funny Boy (2020). She has also directed episodes of the television series Little America (2020) and Yellowjackets (2021).

She co-founded the production company Hamilton-Mehta Productions with producer David Hamilton. Mehta has received the Order of Canada and the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
