Biography

Deepti Naval is an Indian-American actress, director and writer, born on 3 February 1952 in Amritsar, Punjab, India. She studied fine arts at Hunter College in New York and made her film debut in Junoon (1978), followed by a lead role in Ek Baar Phir (1980). She became prominent in parallel cinema during the 1980s, appearing in films such as Chashme Buddoor (1981), in which she played the character Miss Chamko, Saath Saath (1982), Katha (1983) and Mirch Masala (1987), often alongside Farooque Shaikh.

Naval has continued to work in both independent and mainstream Hindi films, with later credits including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), B.A. Pass (2012), NH10 (2015), Bang Bang! (2014) and Lion (2016), in which she played Saroj Sood. She has also directed films and appeared in television productions such as The Boy with the Topknot (2017) and Criminal Justice (2019). She has received Best Actress awards at several international film festivals.
