Biography
Delia Ann Derbyshire was an English composer and musician specialising in electronic music. She was born on 5 May 1937 in Coventry and died on 3 July 2001 in Northampton. After studying music and mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge, she joined the BBC in 1960 and worked at the Radiophonic Workshop from 1962 until 1973.
Her best-known work is the electronic realisation of Ron Grainer's theme for the original Doctor Who series in 1963, which served as the main title music until 1980. Elements of her arrangement were incorporated into the revived series from 2005. She also composed the score, with Brian Hodgson, for the film The Legend of Hell House (1973). After leaving the BBC she worked briefly at Electrophon studio before largely withdrawing from music composition in the mid-1970s.
