Biography
Dennis Shryack (1936–2016) was an American screenwriter. Born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, he began his career as a singer in the vocal quartet The Escorts before working in the mailroom at Universal Pictures. His first produced screenplay was the 1969 Western comedy The Good Guys and the Bad Guys, which he co-wrote and co-produced.
Shryack frequently collaborated with Michael Butler on six screenplays, including The Gauntlet (1977) and Pale Rider (1985), both directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. Other credits include The Car (1977), Flashpoint (1984), Code of Silence (1985), Rent-a-Cop (1987), Hero and the Terror (1988), Turner & Hooch (1989) and Cadence (1990). The Turner & Hooch script set a record sale price of $1 million for Touchstone Pictures at the time.
Later in his career Shryack worked as a literary agent and returned to Duluth, where he died in 2016.
