Biography
Diahann Carroll was an American actress and singer. Born Carol Diahann Johnson on 17 July 1935 in the Bronx, New York, she made her film debut as Myrt in Carmen Jones (1954). She appeared in other early major studio films with black casts, including Porgy and Bess (1959).
Carroll won a Tony Award for best actress in a musical in 1962 for her role in the Broadway production No Strings, the first such award for a black woman. She starred as the title character in the television series Julia (1968–1971), the first American series to feature a black woman in a non-stereotypical leading role, and later played Dominique Devereaux in Dynasty (1981–1987). She received an Academy Award nomination for best actress for her performance in Claudine (1974). Carroll died on 4 October 2019.
