Biography
Diane Johnson is an American novelist, essayist and screenwriter. Born Diane Lain on 28 April 1934 in Moline, Illinois, she attended Stephens College in Missouri.
She is the author of novels including The Shadow Knows (1974), Persian Nights (1987) – a Pulitzer Prize finalist – and Le Divorce (1997). In 1980 she co-wrote the screenplay for Stanley Kubrick’s film The Shining with the director. A film adaptation of Le Divorce was released in 2003, directed by James Ivory.
Johnson has also written essays and contributed to publications such as The New York Review of Books. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
