Biography

Diane Thomas was an American screenwriter. She wrote the screenplay for the 1984 film Romancing the Stone, her only produced screenplay credit. The script was sold to Columbia Pictures and producer Michael Douglas for $250,000 while she was working as a waitress.

Thomas was born on 7 January 1946 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She attended the University of Southern California, worked as an advertising copywriter and studied acting. After the success of Romancing the Stone, she was hired by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and worked on other projects, including a draft for a third Indiana Jones film and an early version of Always (1989). She received a character credit on the 1985 sequel The Jewel of the Nile.

Thomas died on 21 October 1985 in a car crash near Topanga, California, aged 39.
