Biography
Dick Purcell (born Richard Gerold Purcell Jr.) was an American actor. He attended Fordham University in New York and began his career on the stage before moving to Hollywood in 1935. He appeared in numerous films, often in supporting roles at Warner Bros., and is credited as Mackley Q. Greene in The Bank Dick (1940).
Purcell is best known for portraying Grant Gardner / Captain America in the 1944 Republic serial Captain America. He had previously appeared in films including Follow the Fleet (1936), Bullets or Ballots (1936) and King of the Zombies (1941). He was married briefly to actress Ethelind Terry in 1942.
Purcell died of a heart attack on 10 April 1944 in Hollywood, California, shortly after completing the Captain America serial, which was released on 5 February that year.
