Biography
Donal McCann (7 May 1943 – 17 July 1999) was an Irish stage, film and television actor. Born in Dublin, he was the son of playwright and politician John J. McCann, who served twice as Lord Mayor of Dublin. He trained at the Abbey School of Acting and joined the Abbey Players in the late 1960s.
McCann was particularly noted for his work in plays by Brian Friel and for his performance as Thomas Dunne in Sebastian Barry’s The Steward of Christendom, for which he received the London Critics Circle Theatre Award in 1995. His best-known film role was as Gabriel Conroy in John Huston’s The Dead (1987). Other film appearances include Out of Africa (1985), Rawhead Rex (1986), High Spirits (1988) and Stealing Beauty (1996).
