Biography

Donna Zakowska is an American costume designer for film, television and theatre. Born in Brooklyn in 1954, she studied at Barnard College, the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Yale School of Drama.

She began her career as an assistant on Woody Allen films and as a designer for the Big Apple Circus, where she worked for nine seasons, as well as on a Mick Jagger concert tour. Zakowska has collaborated frequently with director John Turturro. Her credits include Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), New York Stories (1989), Kate & Leopold (2001), The Iceman (2012), Gringo (2018) and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017–2023).

She was head costume designer on the HBO miniseries John Adams (2008), for which she received a Costume Designers Guild Award in 2008 and a Primetime Emmy Award in 2009. She later designed for the AMC series Turn: Washington's Spies (2014–2017) and received further Emmy Awards and nominations for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
