Biography
Dorothy Fortenberry is a writer and producer working in television. She began her career as a playwright, with productions including a Humana Festival staging of her play Partners in 2014. She later transitioned to television writing through the Warner Bros. Television Workshop.
Fortenberry served as a writer and in various producer roles, including producer, supervising producer and co-executive producer, on The Handmaid's Tale (2017–2021). She contributed teleplays and written-by credits across multiple episodes. Earlier, she worked as a writer and story editor on The 100 (2014–2016). She was co-showrunner and executive producer on the 2023 anthology series Extrapolations.
She has received three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Drama Series for her work on The Handmaid's Tale, along with Producers Guild of America and Writers Guild of America awards. Fortenberry also writes essays on politics and culture for outlets including Slate and The Atlantic, and has advocated for climate-conscious storytelling.
