Biography

Douglas Day Stewart is an American screenwriter and film director. He was born on 1 January 1940 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 1962. After serving as a naval officer from 1962 to 1965, including duty during the Vietnam War, he earned an M.A. from Northwestern University in radio, television and film.

Stewart began his career writing for television series including Room 222, Bonanza and Cannon, and television films such as The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (1976). His feature screenplays include The Blue Lagoon (1980) and An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and also served as producer. He later wrote and directed Thief of Hearts (1984) and Listen to Me (1989), and wrote the screenplay for The Scarlet Letter (1995).
