Biography
Dušan Kovačević is a Serbian playwright, scriptwriter and film director. He was born on 12 July 1948 in Mrđenovac near Šabac. He graduated from the Svetozar Marković Gymnasium in Novi Sad and received a bachelor's degree in dramaturgy from the University of Belgrade in 1973. From 1973 he worked as a dramaturge at TV Beograd for five years. Since 1998 he has been artistic director of Zvezdara teatar in Belgrade.
Kovačević wrote the story and screenplay for Underground (1995), directed by Emir Kusturica. He is also known for the screenplays of Who's Singin' Over There? (1980) and The Marathon Family (1982), and for writing and directing Balkan Spy (1984) and The Professional (2003). He is a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and served as Serbia's ambassador to Portugal.
