Fi1m perspective

Dylan Bruce is television's man in the good coat: the soldier or the minder whose loyalties turn when the plot requires it. He is steady, unhurried and hard to read, and on Orphan Black he was hard to read to a fault.

Paul Dierden stands in a doorway in the first season of Orphan Black (2013) and watches a woman who is not who he thinks she is, and for several episodes the question is whose side he is on. Bruce plays it stock still, jaw set, eyes giving away nothing at all. That stillness is his trade. He is cast, again and again, as the military or mercenary type whose allegiance is the plot's to spend, and he has the build and the level voice for it.

He learned the job the fast way. After university he went into modelling in Seattle, then small television parts from 2005, and then around a hundred episodes as Chris Hughes on the daytime soap As the World Turns (2007–2008). He is unapologetic about it: "No rehearsal, 120 pages of dialogue per week, and one take to get the scene right. No room for error." His first film was Unstoppable (2010), for Tony Scott, and then came Orphan Black, four seasons as Paul, the monitor and the love interest. Around and after it he has worked steadily in genre television: Arrow (2013–2014) as Adam Donner, Heroes Reborn (2015), American Gothic (2016), leads in Midnight, Texas (2017–2018) as Bobo Winthrop and The Murders (2019), and more recently Tracker (2024) and We Were Liars (2025).

The trouble with Paul is that the writing made him a mystery and Bruce made him a blank, and those are not the same thing. We spent the better part of two seasons watching his face for a tell and never found one, which is reasonable in a man paid to watch someone and less reasonable in a man supposed to be falling for her. Opposite Tatiana Maslany, who is playing several people at once and letting us see the seams, one unchanging register looks small. He becomes one more man in a coat explaining the previous season, and the show already had enough of those.

The soap habit of getting it right in one take is a virtue on a schedule and a limit in a character. Bruce is at his best when we are not meant to be sure of him; when we are meant to care, he needs a director prepared to make him blink. Watch Orphan Black for Maslany, and count him as the door she keeps having to get past.
