Biography
Dziga Vertov was a Soviet film director, writer and theorist. Born David Abelevich Kaufman in Bialystok in 1896, he adopted his pseudonym after the October Revolution and began editing newsreels during the Russian Civil War. He later directed a government cinema department and formed the Kinoks group, which promoted the kino-eye approach to documentary filmmaking.
Vertov is best known for the experimental silent documentary Man with a Movie Camera (1929), on which he served as director and writer. Other notable works include Kino-Eye (1924) and Enthusiasm: Symphony of Donbas (1930). He died in Moscow in 1954.
