Fi1m perspective

Hardwicke's trick is to do almost nothing and make it frightening. As Ben Field in The Sixth Commandment he gives a killer a soft jumper, good manners and no interior at all, and we have rarely wanted so badly to shout at a screen.

The scene we keep coming back to is one in which nothing happens. In The Sixth Commandment Ben Field pours Peter a drink at the kitchen table, sits down and watches him drink it. Saul Dibb holds the shot. Timothy Spall lets a giddiness into Peter's face that is painful to see, because we know what he does not, and Éanna Hardwicke, across the table, does not move. We wanted to shout at the screen, and the reason is that Hardwicke gives us nothing at all to read: no flicker, no tell, no private smile for the audience. That is what frightened us.

The stillness is his instrument, and he has been sharpening it for a while. He had a child's part in Conor McPherson's The Eclipse in 2009, went away for a decade, trained at the Lir Academy and came back in 2019 with Vivarium. Normal People in 2020, where he played Rob Hegarty alongside his Lir contemporary Paul Mescal, got him noticed in a supporting part. Lakelands (2022), directed by Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney, gave him his first lead, a Gaelic footballer dealing with an injury, and the first chance to show what he does best at length: a reserved young man with something underneath. Then came Ben Field, and the turn.

What works in Field is how little he gives. Hardwicke plays him pleasant, tidy, good with old people, handy at church. Amanda Perryman dresses him in soft jumpers and open collars, and he never raises his voice. Sarah Phelps declines to explain him and Hardwicke declines to hint, so for four hours we are looking at a blank and the blank is looking back. That is honest, and it is rarer than it sounds, since most actors playing killers cannot resist a moment of showing us the wiring. It is also, by the third episode, a problem. A story that will not get inside its villain has to hold the last two hours with something else, and the police procedure the series finds is not it. That is a writing fault more than an acting one, but a performance built entirely on giving nothing away does leave a drama with nowhere to go.

Since then he has been choosing against type. The Doll Factory (2023), William Tell, Roy Keane in Saipan (2025), and Christy Mahon in The Playboy of the Western World at the National Theatre, a part that is all talk in Synge's heightened language. We have not reviewed those and will not judge them here, but the direction is plain: the quiet actor has gone looking for noise. The reviews so far have found nothing to hold against him, which usually means an actor has not yet been asked for the thing he cannot do. Roy Keane is not a quiet part. That may be where we find out.
