Biography
Edna Thomas (born Edna Lewis) was an American actress. She was born on 1 November 1885 in Lawrenceville, Virginia, and died on 22 July 1974 in New York City. Her stage career began in New York during the Harlem Renaissance. She appeared on Broadway and with companies including the Lafayette Players and the Federal Theater Project.
Thomas played Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles's 1936 all-Black production of Macbeth. She appeared in other Broadway productions such as Strange Fruit (1945) and Harriet (1944). She portrayed the Mexican Woman in the original Broadway run of A Streetcar Named Desire (1947–1949) and its revivals, and reprised the role in the 1951 film adaptation, her only screen credit. She was married to Lloyd Thomas.
