Biography
Edward Black (18 August 1900 – 30 November 1948) was an English film producer. He was head of production at Gainsborough Studios in the late 1930s and early 1940s, during which time he oversaw the production of the Gainsborough melodramas. He also produced such films as The Lady Vanishes (1938), Young and Innocent (1937), Night Train to Munich (1940) and The Man in Grey (1943).
Black was the third son of George Black, a property master at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham, who became a cinema owner. After his father's death in 1910, Black and his brothers built up a cinema circuit, which they sold in 1928. He joined Gaumont British and became studio manager for Gainsborough Pictures in 1928, later moving into production. In 1937 he took charge of Gainsborough alongside Maurice Ostrer following the closure of other Gaumont British facilities. Black left Gainsborough in 1944 to join Alexander Korda, for whom he produced A Man About the House (1947) and Bonnie Prince Charlie (1948). He died of lung cancer in London.
