Biography
Eileen Herlie (born Eileen Isobel Herlihy) was a Scottish actress. She made her stage debut with the Scottish National Players in 1938 and moved to London in 1942, where her early roles included the second Mrs de Winter in Rebecca.
Herlie played Queen Gertrude opposite Laurence Olivier in his 1948 film adaptation of Hamlet. She reprised the role in the 1964 Broadway production starring Richard Burton and its film version. Other film credits include Freud: The Secret Passion (1962) as Frau Ida Koertner.
She moved permanently to the United States in 1955 and appeared in numerous stage productions, including musicals for which she received a Tony nomination. From 1976 until her death she was known for her long-running role as Myrtle Fargate in the soap opera All My Children.
