Biography
Elizabeth Jane Howard was an English novelist and television scriptwriter. She was born in London on 26 March 1923 and died in Bungay, Suffolk, on 2 January 2014.
Howard wrote episodes for the series Upstairs, Downstairs (1971). She is best known for the five novels of the Cazalet Chronicle, published between 1990 and 2013, which were partly adapted for BBC television in 2001. Her other novels include The Beautiful Visit (1950), The Long View (1956), After Julius (1965) and Getting It Right (1982).
Earlier in her career she worked as an actress, a BBC broadcaster during the Second World War and an editor at publishing houses. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film Getting It Right.
