Biography
Elizabeth Patterson, also credited as Mary Elizabeth Patterson, was an American character actress who worked in theatre, film and television. Born in Savannah, Tennessee, she began her stage career in the early twentieth century and made her film debut in the silent era with The Boy Friend (1926). She appeared in numerous supporting roles throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including as First Aunt in Love Me Tonight (1932).
Patterson gained wider recognition in later years for her recurring television role as neighbour Matilda Trumbull on I Love Lucy (1951). Her other notable film credits include Dinner at Eight (1933), Remember the Night (1940), The Cat and the Canary (1939), I Married a Witch (1942), Little Women (1949) and Intruder in the Dust (1949). She never married and died in Los Angeles in 1966.
