Ella Rubin

In Sterling Point (2026), Ella Rubin's Annie Jacobson talks quickly, watches everyone and rarely apologises. She has inherited an island in Canada and discovered a sister, but Rubin plays her as someone determined to proceed as though she had expected all of this. That refusal to concede a mistake could make Annie tiresome, yet the watchfulness matters: she is taking in more than she is prepared to acknowledge. We warmed to her because Rubin lets us see the uncertainty beneath the briskness.

Supporting work in Anora (2024) and The Idea of You (2024) preceded the lead in the horror film Until Dawn (2025). Annie is her first television series lead, continuing a move towards larger parts after recurring television work. Rubin has often been cast as anxious or high-achieving young women, and this gives her time to develop one beyond an immediately recognisable type. Across eight episodes, the interest is in how she responds to someone whose habits are quite different from her own.

Megan Park's dialogue gives her something precise to do: Annie and Ramona interrupt each other, deliberately mishear and approach difficult subjects by apparently discussing something else. Amélie Hoeferle's Ramona is slower and warier, so Annie's speed is never the only thing determining how their scenes play. We can hear the difference between the sisters without either having to explain it. Rubin is good at keeping the exchange unsettled, making a quick response sound like a way of avoiding the thing Annie ought to say.

The mystery is the weaker part of Sterling Point, and Rubin cannot make it as compelling as the sisters' conversations. Her performance works because Park gives her another actor to react to, not just a puzzle to solve. It would be a waste if the reward were simply more parts requiring the same defensive speed. Start with Sterling Point for the sisters, rather than the clues.
