Biography
Elżbieta Czyżewska was a Polish actress who worked in both Poland and the United States. Born in Warsaw in 1938, she trained at the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw and began her career in the late 1950s with stage and film roles.
She rose to prominence in Polish cinema with performances in films including The Saragossa Manuscript (1964, dir. Wojciech Has), in which she played Donna Frasquetta Salero, Marriage of Convenience (1966) and Everything for Sale (1969, dir. Andrzej Wajda). She was married to director Jerzy Skolimowski from 1959 to 1965.
Czyżewska moved to New York in the mid-1960s and appeared in supporting roles in American films and television, including Music Box (1989) and episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Damages. She received an Obie Award in 1990 for her stage work. She died in New York in 2010.
