Biography
Emilio Fernández Romo, known as 'El Indio', was a Mexican film director, screenwriter and actor. Born on 26 March 1904 in Sabinas, Coahuila, he was one of the leading figures of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and 1950s.
He directed María Candelaria (1944), which won the Palme d'Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival, as well as Enamorada (1946) and The Pearl (1947). Fernández also appeared as an actor in numerous Mexican and Hollywood productions, including The Wild Bunch (1969) as Gen. Mapache and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) as El Jefe. He died on 6 August 1986 in Mexico City.
