Biography
Enrico Maria Salerno (1926–1994) was an Italian actor, voice actor and film director. Born in Milan, he began his career in theatre after the Second World War, working with companies including the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and the Teatro Stabile di Genova, and later co-founding the Compagnia degli Attori Associati.
He appeared in numerous films from the late 1950s onwards, including Violent Summer (1959), The Assassin (1961), I Knew Her Well (1965), For Love and Gold (1966) and The Conspirators (1969). He is particularly noted for his role as Inspector Morosini in Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970). Salerno was also a prominent dubber, providing the Italian voice for Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy and for Christ in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964).
He directed three feature films, the best known being the romantic drama The Anonymous Venetian (1970). His brother Vittorio Salerno was a film director, and his daughter Chiara Salerno became an actress and dubber.
