Biography
Eric Ambler was a British writer and screenwriter. Born in London on 28 June 1909, he published his first novel in 1936 and became known for thrillers and spy novels such as The Mask of Dimitrios (1939) and Journey into Fear (1940).
Ambler wrote screenplays for several films, including The Way Ahead (1944), The Cruel Sea (1953), The Purple Plain (1954), The Passionate Friends (1949), The Wreck of the Mary Deare (1959) and A Night to Remember (1958). He also wrote teleplays for Alfred Hitchcock Presents and created the television series Checkmate (1960–1962). He received an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay for The Cruel Sea and was appointed OBE.
Ambler died in London in October 1998.
