Biography
Eric Sykes (1923–2012) was an English actor, writer and director whose career in comedy spanned more than six decades. He began as a radio scriptwriter in the 1940s and 1950s, contributing to shows including The Goon Show, before moving into performance on radio, television and stage.
Sykes starred in his own long-running BBC sitcom Sykes (and its earlier incarnation Sykes and a...) alongside Hattie Jacques. He wrote and directed the silent comedy short The Plank (1967) and appeared in numerous films, among them Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965). Later screen roles included Mr Edmund Tuttle in The Others (2001) and Frank Bryce in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). He received an OBE in 1986 and a CBE in 2005.
