Biography
Ernest Steward (also credited as E. Steward or Ernie Steward) was a British cinematographer. Born in London on 11 September 1910, he died on 8 April 1990. He began his career as a camera operator on films including Great Expectations (1946) before becoming a director of photography.
Steward worked extensively with director Ralph Thomas on 32 productions between 1950 and 1971, and with producer Betty Box on the Doctor comedy series. He was cinematographer on numerous Carry On films from Carry On Up the Khyber (1968) onwards, alternating with Alan Hume. His television credits include episodes of The Avengers (1965–1967), The New Avengers and The Professionals.
