Biography

Errol John (20 December 1924 – 10 July 1988) was a Trinidadian actor and playwright. Born in Port of Spain, he began his career as a journalist and commercial artist before co-founding the amateur Whitehall Players theatre group in 1946. He emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1951, where he worked in theatre and took small roles in films such as The African Queen (1951) and The Heart of the Matter (1953).

John gained wider recognition for his play Moon on a Rainbow Shawl, which won the Observer Drama Competition in 1957 and was staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1958. As an actor he appeared in supporting roles in films including The Nun's Story (1959) as Illunga, Buck and the Preacher (1972) as Joshua and Sheena (1984) as Bolu, as well as television series such as A Man from the Sun (1956) and Rainbow City (1967). He also took the title role in a 1963 Old Vic production of Othello.
