Biography
Ewa Smal is a Polish film editor. She was born on 19 June 1949 in Berlin and graduated in 1985 from the part-time Higher Vocational Film Editing Studies programme at the Łódź Film School. She began working in film in the 1970s as an assistant director before turning to editing; she has worked as an independent editor since 1986 on more than forty productions.
Smal edited several episodes of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Decalogue series (1989), including Decalogue V, as well as the related A Short Film About Love (1988) and A Short Film About Killing (1988). Other credits include Europa Europa (1990) and a long collaboration with director Marek Koterski on films such as Day of the Wacko (2002) and Wszyscy jesteśmy Chrystusami (2006). She has twice won the Film Editing Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and received the Polish Film Award (Eagle) for Best Editing. She is a member of the Polish Film Academy and was awarded the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis in 2016.
