Biography
Fay Weldon (1931–2023) was a British novelist, playwright and screenwriter. Born Franklin Birkinshaw in Birmingham, she worked as an advertising copywriter before beginning to write for television and radio in the 1960s.
She wrote the first episode of the ITV series Upstairs, Downstairs (1971), for which she received a Writers' Guild award, and contributed further episodes to the series. Her best-known novel, The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (1983), was adapted for television by the BBC in 1986 and as a feature film in 1989. She published more than 30 novels and was appointed CBE in 2001.
