Biography
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Born in Hamburg in 1809, he composed symphonies, concertos, piano and chamber music, and oratorios including St. Paul and Elijah.
Mendelssohn wrote an overture and incidental music for Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in the 1820s and 1840s. His music from the play, along with other works, was used in the 1935 Warner Bros. film adaptation directed by Max Reinhardt, re-orchestrated by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
