In Tremors (1990), Finn Carter's Rhonda LeBeck approaches the creatures as a problem that practical knowledge might help solve. Carter's naturalistic delivery makes that competence easy to believe, and we rate her ability to keep an outlandish film grounded without draining its fun. She is useful to the ensemble without insisting on being its centre. We found her steadiness reassuring because Rhonda gives us someone capable to trust as the circumstances become increasingly unreasonable.
Her early television work gave her time to establish a character across several years in As the World Turns (1985–1988). Her feature debut, How I Got Into College (1989), put her opposite Anthony Edwards in a starring romantic-comedy part. Tremors brought wider recognition, followed by a recurring role as nurse Linda Matlock Lanier in China Beach (1990) and supporting work including Rob Reiner's Ghosts of Mississippi (1996). Few leading film roles followed Tremors, leaving us with less evidence than we would like of what else she could do.
Ron Underwood's Tremors gives her a good ensemble to work within, and Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward's rapport does much of the work of holding it together. O. Nicholas Brown's editing preserves the pauses in their comic exchanges, giving the humour time to work. Alongside Michael Gross and Reba McEntire's comic confidence, Carter's matter-of-fact manner helps keep the townspeople believable. Her explanations are easier to accept because she sounds like someone using her knowledge, not simply passing information to the audience.
There is a risk in this sort of casting: the capable professional can be left explaining things while everyone else gets the jokes. Carter makes that function worth watching, and her contribution deserves a share of the credit for the film's warmth. Tremors itself labours a little in its closing stretch; keeping us interested in the townspeople does not fix every problem of pace. For Carter, Tremors is the place to start.
Biography
Finn Carter is an American actress, also credited as Elizabeth Fearn Carter. Born on 9 March 1960 in Greenville, Mississippi, she is the daughter of journalist and former US Assistant Secretary of State Hodding Carter III and his first wife, Margaret Ainsworth Wolfe. She trained at the Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, Skidmore College and Tulane University, and began her career in theatre as a member of the Circle Repertory Company in New York.
Carter is best known for playing Rhonda LeBeck in the 1990 film Tremors. She appeared as Sierra Estaban Reyes Montgomery in the CBS soap opera As the World Turns from 1985 to 1988, with a reprise in 1994, and had a recurring role in China Beach. Her other credits include guest appearances in Law & Order, ER, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Murder, She Wrote, The Outer Limits, Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) and Diagnosis: Murder, as well as the films How I Got Into College (1989) and Sweet Justice (1992). She was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for Tremors. Her screen career ran from 1985 to 2005.
