Biography
Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison on 7 October 1983 in Los Angeles, California, is an American composer, record producer, filmmaker and rapper. He is also known by the aliases FlyLo and Captain Murphy.
He has composed original music for films including The Furious (2026), for which he contributed the end-credits song 'Mudhole' under his Captain Murphy persona, Ash (2025), which he also directed, V/H/S/99 (2022), Yasuke (2021) and Kuso (2017). He founded the record label Brainfeeder and has directed several feature films.
Ellison is the grandson of songwriter Marilyn McLeod and the grand-nephew of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane.
