Biography
Francesco Rosi was an Italian film director and screenwriter. Born in Naples in 1922, he began his career assisting Luchino Visconti on neorealist films including La Terra Trema (1948) and later worked with Michelangelo Antonioni.
Rosi made his directorial debut with The Challenge (1958). He directed Salvatore Giuliano (1962), Hands Over the City (1963), Many Wars Ago (1970), The Mattei Affair (1972), Illustrious Corpses (1976), Christ Stopped at Eboli (1979) and Three Brothers (1981). His films frequently examined political and social themes in contemporary Italy. The Mattei Affair won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1972. Rosi died in Rome in 2015.
