Biography
Francis Compton (born Francis Sidney Compton Mackenzie; 4 May 1885 – 17 September 1964) was an English actor. A member of the Compton acting family, he made his stage debut in 1904 with his father's Compton Comedy Company and appeared in numerous stage productions, primarily in the United States after the First World War, during which he served with the 18th London Regiment and was awarded the Military Cross.
His film roles included Soak the Rich (1936), Rage in Heaven (1941) and an uncredited part in Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941). He is best known for his final film role as the judge in Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Compton also made many television appearances, including episodes of Studio One, The Alcoa Hour and Naked City.
