Biography
Franco Brusati (1922–1993) was an Italian screenwriter, director and playwright. He studied law and political science at the University of Milan and the University of Geneva, and worked as a journalist before entering the film industry in the late 1940s as an assistant director to Roberto Rossellini and Renato Castellani. He wrote screenplays for directors including Mario Camerini, Luciano Emmer and Franco Zeffirelli.
Brusati made his directorial debut with Il padrone sono me (1956) and went on to direct films such as Il disordine (1962), I tulipani di Haarlem (1970) and Pane e cioccolata (Bread and Chocolate, 1974). His screenplay credits include Romeo and Juliet (1968), Ulisse (Ulysses, 1954) and Domenica d'agosto (Sunday in August, 1950). Pane e cioccolata and Dimenticare Venezia (To Forget Venice, 1979) both won the David di Donatello for Best Film; the latter received an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film. In 1983 he served on the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival.
