Biography
Frank Galati (1943–2023) was an American writer, director and actor. He co-wrote the screenplay for the 1988 film The Accidental Tourist with Lawrence Kasdan, an adaptation of Anne Tyler’s novel that received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Galati was a prominent figure in Chicago theatre. He was a long-time ensemble member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and an associate director at the Goodman Theatre. He adapted John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath for the stage; the production won two Tony Awards in 1990, for Best Play and Best Direction of a Play. He also directed Broadway productions including Ragtime (1998). Galati taught theatre at Northwestern University for many years.
