Biography
Frans Helmerson is a Swedish cellist, pedagogue and conductor. Born on 3 November 1945 in Falköping, he began playing the cello at the age of eight and studied in Gothenburg, Rome and London, including with Mstislav Rostropovich.
Helmerson performed as a musician on Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander (1982), playing Benjamin Britten’s Suite No. 2 for Cello Solo. He has also contributed to the soundtracks of Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg (1990), Sunday’s Children (1992) and The End of the Affair (1999). In 2002 he co-founded the Michelangelo String Quartet. He has taught at institutions including the Hochschule für Musik Köln and the Kronberg Academy, and received the Litteris et Artibus award in 1989.
