Biography
Fred Coe was an American producer and director of theatre, television and film. Born in Alligator, Mississippi, he studied at the Yale School of Drama before beginning his career in television at NBC in the mid-1940s.
He produced anthology series including Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse (1948–1955) and Playhouse 90 (1957–1959), and several Broadway productions such as The Miracle Worker (1960) and A Thousand Clowns (1962). Coe produced and directed the 1965 film adaptation of A Thousand Clowns, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. He died in Los Angeles in 1979.
