Biography
Fred Crane (1918–2008) was an American actor and radio announcer. Born Herman Frederick Crane in New Orleans, Louisiana, he is best known for his role as Brent Tarleton (miscredited as Stuart Tarleton) in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind, in which he spoke the opening lines alongside George Reeves.
Crane had no prior screen experience when he was cast after impressing the production team with his Southern accent. He later appeared in the 1949 film The Gay Amigo and in television series including Peyton Place, The Twilight Zone (1963) and Lost in Space (1965). From the mid-1940s he worked as a classical music radio announcer in Los Angeles, retiring in 1987.
