Biography
Frederick Marx is an American film director, writer, editor and producer. He co-wrote, edited and produced the documentary Hoop Dreams (1994) with Steve James and Peter Gilbert. The film won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was the first documentary to close the New York Film Festival. It was named Best Film of the Year by Roger Ebert and added to the US Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2005.
Marx graduated from the University of Illinois Laboratory High School in Urbana in 1973 and holds a BA in Political Science and an MFA in filmmaking from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He received an Academy Award nomination for editing Hoop Dreams, an Emmy nomination for the PBS special Higher Goals (1992), and was named Chicago Tribune Artist of the Year in 1994. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995 and a Robert F. Kennedy Special Achievement Award.
He founded the nonprofit production company Warrior Films in Oakland, California. Other directing credits include Journey from Zanskar (2010) and several short films and series on rites of passage and social issues.
