Biography
Gabriel Pascal was a Hungarian film producer and director. Born Gábor Lehel on 4 June 1894 in Arad, Austria-Hungary (now Romania), he worked in several European countries before settling in the United Kingdom.
Pascal was the first producer to bring plays by George Bernard Shaw successfully to the screen. His credits include Pygmalion (1938), for which he received an Academy Award nomination as producer; Major Barbara (1941); Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), which he also directed; and Androcles and the Lion (1952).
His best-known films were produced in the United Kingdom. Pascal died in New York City on 6 July 1954.
